Preventive Maintenance

Computers need regular maintenance and, at times, repair. Even when we think we’ve taken the best precautions, computers and networks crash or become prey to viruses, spam, and spyware. Proper maintenance reduces down time and increases productivity through improved system performance.  If your computers are maintained on contract by Daniel Data we will do the following:

• Ensure that critical operating systems updates are installed.
• If Microsoft Office is in use, insure that available updates are installed.
• Ensure that anti-virus and anti-spyware protection is current and that regular scanning is being performed and that infections are being removed or quarantined.
• Remove unneeded programs from automatic startup as these can significantly degrade performance.
• Determine that adequate disk space is available.
• Determine that adequate memory is available based on the needs of the user and the operating system that is installed.

Virus and Spyware Protection

Daniel Data uses the suite of anti-virus and anti-spyware products available from Trend Micro to protect home PC’s and entire business networks. 

• Trend Micro™ Internet Security (formerly PC-cillin) provides protection against both viruses and spyware as well as scanning for Microsoft vulnerabilities.  It may be installed on up to three PC’s, has a very small footprint and minimizes the scanning performance hit when compared to the better known products in its class. 
• Client Server Security for SMB is a sever-based product which performs scanning for viruses, spyware and Microsoft Vulnerabilities for entire networks of computers while providing management with centralized email reporting of the scan results.  This product provides centralized installation, configuration and management, including the establishment of scan schedules and who is to be notified when problems are encountered.
• Client Server Messaging Security for SMB is a sever-based product performing much the same function as above but is specifically targeted at additionally protecting the Microsoft Exchange Server and Microsoft Small Business Server including its Exchange Server components.

Enterprise Spam Prevention

For those companies which host their own email the control of spam can be a real headache.  There are many studies which show the high cost of this intrusive and nuisance email.  For most businesses the percentage of email which is spam is in excess of 80%. Reviewing and deleting spam entails a phenomenally high cost, which only increases with the size of the company. 

Some large companies implement their own in-house spam filtering solutions.  Daniel Data looked at this option several years ago and saw it as a full-time job for even a dedicated individual. As a result of our unease with this solution, we turned to hosted spam filtering.  This works by redirecting all of a domain’s email to the hosted service, having them filter it for spam, viruses, spyware, phishing schemes, and offensive content and then forwarding only the good email to the client.  This greatly decreases the load on the client’s mail server, usually by more than 80% of the total traffic, and of course eliminates the time wasted by employees in sorting through the chaff in their inboxes.  And, of course the viruses are caught before they reach the client’s computers.

Red Condor is the email filter company which Daniel Data utilizes..  As a reseller of their service, we will setup your company and train you in the use of their service.  We have found their service to be highly reliable and their support is outstanding.  No filter will be a 100% solution as some spam will slip through but reducing the amount by 98-99% provides large cost savings and adds many hours per week for your staff to perform their intended jobs rather than reviewing junk emails.  The Red Condor website is very easy to use and we will train your designated staff persons to fine tune the filters for your specific business needs.  They will then be able to easily setup whitelists (friends) and blacklists (enemies) for your entire company and for individual email accounts as well as be able to view a variety of activity reports in nearly real-time.
